Description:: We would like to invite you to what promises to be a powerful learning and healing experience. Dr. Chris Mato Nunpa, of the Yellow Medicine Dakota, and his colleagues have been doing very important truth-telling work, telling the stories of the Dakota people in the face of a Minnesota sesquicentennial celebration that has left out much of the story. The European American community at the Cultural Wellness Center will host Mr. Mato Nunpa for a truth-telling this spring.

In order to prepare for the truth-telling, we are holding a series of classes and ceremonies for the European American community. The sessions will anchor us to our ancestors, to each other, and to the land, so that we will be better able to hold difficult truths as a community.

If you would like to join us for the truth-telling, we ask that you participate in each of the following sessions. The classes will also be open to European Americans who wish to learn about a particular topic, but don't choose to be a part of the truth-telling. We hope this can be a model for other truth-telling work in the future.

Each session will include discussion to draw on the knowledge and experiences of all participants. A ritual will be created and performed by participants at the conclusion of each topic.

Donations for each session are welcome.

Connecting and Reconciling with Our Ancestors
Tuesdays, January 13 and January 20, 6:30-8:30 PM

In many European traditions, connections with ancestors have played an important role in healing work, but factors like the migration experience and the push toward assimilation into American culture can have the effect of separating us from our ancestors. Some of the most common responses of people of European heritage to difficult stories of oppression or injustice are But that was so long ago, and My ancestors didn't participate in that, or Why should I feel responsible for the actions of my ancestors? Examining and understanding our connection to our ancestors, which can be both painful and enriching, can bring us many insights into how we can reconcile with our history, resolve unhealthy patterns and build upon the best parts of our ancestors legacy. What are the benefits of connecting with ancestors and how do we make this connection? What issues can a connection with ancestors help us to reconcile?

Connecting to the Land
Tuesdays, January 27 and February 3, 6:30-8:30 PM

Land is a powerful concept in Western culture/s. The need for land for agriculture, the ownership of land and the status that gives, the cultural lore and symbols connected to land, our spiritual connection to land, the concept of sovereignty and the land, rituals with the land, the effects of moving away from our homeland, the way our geography makes us who we are so much of our culture and our sense of well-being is rooted in the land. We will explore our cultural history, understandings, and connections to land and the implications for health and harmony in our lives today.

Connecting with Community
Tuesday, February 10, 6:30-8:30 PM

Modern European American culture emphasizes individualism, often without the counterbalance of community. But in order to hold and reconcile to our history, we need to be able to act as a community. What are the teachings from our earlier cultural traditions that help us to come together and support each other? How can we hold difficult truths from our past and present together, as a community? We will talk about what our culture/s teach about community, and how we can rebuild community bonds that have been eroded by unbalanced individualism.

It is easy to become immobilized when faced with the devastating impacts that European American culture has had on other peoples. What resources do we have from our cultural traditions that can help us to take responsibility for this history? What can help us overcome guilt and immobilization to create healthier cultural patterns that can lead to greater harmony in ourselves and with other peoples?
